Fun, Fitness & Freedom at Asthma Camp

Thousands of children with asthma do not participate in physical activity because they fear exercise will trigger an attack. Yet, exercise is important to their health and for their lungs.

Asthma Camp is designed to show children that physical fitness, sport and outdoor activities can be fun, safe, and a part of their lifestyle.

Who
The program is especially designed for children with asthma, ages 5-12.

How Your Child Benefits

• Increased physical stamina and exercise endurance.
• Decreased number of attacks while exercising.
• He or she will learn how to manage asthma while exercising increased self esteem and self confidence.
• They'll have a whole lot of fun!

9-10 am
- Warm-up, fitness, and movement activities lead-up games and sports
10-11 am
- Asthma education & breathing activities; relaxation techniques; crafts
11 am-noon
- Recreational swimming and lessons from qualified instructors

Professionalism & Safety

• A physicians release and medical history are kept on file for each camper
• Camp staff are credentialed (or in training to be) Adapted Physical Education teachers in the public schools
• The staff is trained in emergency procedures with the majority trained in CPR
• Swim lessons by a CPR-trained instructor with a lifeguard on duty at all times
• Access to on-campus physician and nurse during camp hours

Asthma Camp is a cooperative program through California State University, Long Beach, Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County (ALALAC).

Asthma Camp is sponsored by CSULB Department of KPE and ALALAC with support from individuals who contribute to the Association.

Scholarships
Limited scholarships are available based on financial need. Camp fees are already reduced for all campers. Priority is given to first-time campers.
