Timeline of Accomplishments

November 1988 Proposition 99 passes.
March 1997 KICK BUTTS - Youth Advocacy Program of The American Lung Association of Los Angeles County was made possible through funds received from the Tobacco Tax Health Protection Act of 1988 - Proposition 99, with the California Department of Health Services, Tobacco Control Section.
June 1997 KICK BUTTS held a peaceful demonstration outside the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona Administrative Offices for continuing to accept tobacco sponsorship from Philip Morris.
September 1997 KICK BUTTS grant funding was extended to June 30, 2001.
December 1997 "Buttheads, Lung Man, and Smoke Man" program characters are developed.

April 1998 KICK BUTTS along with the Proposition 99 Statewide Mobile Tobacco Education Program, Team O2 vehicle participates in EarthFest '98 (an annual celebration of Earth Day) at the Santa Monica Pier.
April 1998 KICK BUTTS receives a letter from the Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona stating their newly adopted policy to no longer accept tobacco sponsorship.
April 1998 "1.800.806.LUNG" is established.
May 1998 KICK BUTTS celebrates "World No-Tobacco Day" with Watts Health Foundation.
June 1998 KICK BUTTS participates in the Annual Youth Summit, at California State University, Northridge.
June 1998 KICK BUTTS approaches the Watts Summer Festival about promoting their 32nd Annual event as "smoke-free."
July 1998 The first KICK BUTTS newsletter is released.
July 1998 The 32nd Annual Watts Summer Festival is promoted as "smoke-free."

August 1998 KICK BUTTS members attend the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) conference.

August 1998 The Los Angeles County Fair in Pomona no longer accepts tobacco sponsorship from Philip Morris.

October 1998 KICK BUTTS premiers its new Billboard on Garey Ave., Pomona.
October 1998 KICK BUTTS premiers its new theater advertising at the Magic Johnson Theaters in Los Angeles.
October 1998 UNITY in the Community is promoted as "smoke-free."

October 1998 Proposition 99 celebrates its' 10 year Anniversary.
November 1998 The second KICK BUTTS newsletter is released.
November 1998 KICK BUTTS holds a press conference at the Pomona High School Annual Health Fair to promote its' new ad campaign.


February 1999 The KICK BUTTS web page is added to the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County Web-site.
January 2000 1. Family Asthma Awareness Day Health Fair at the Lakewood Center Mall.

Melissa Mills, program manager for Kick Butts presented two abstracts in poster format, displaying many of the successes of KICK BUTTS to thousands of participants at the World Tobacco Conference in Chicago.
