Dr. Drew Pinsky from MTV's Loveline & www.DrDrew.com and Patrick Reynolds, grandson of tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds will be welcoming KICK BUTTS Youth Summit attendees at 9:00am in front of the Taper Auditorium at U.S.C., this Saturday, March 11th!

We're celebrating youth from all over Los Angeles County. Please join the KICK BUTTS Youth Advocacy Program on Saturday, March 11, 2000 at the University of Southern California (USC) Campus. Meet other young adults, ages 11 to 19 who are also interested in making a change in their community. Youth Summit 2000 will be a day filled with interactive workshops, youth guest performers, and great prizes for all attending.

What is KICK BUTTS?

The KICK BUTTS Youth Advocacy Program empowers youth by providing them with important analytical skills including critical thinking techniques, advocacy training, interviewing methods, marketing and intervention strategies to counter pro tobacco influence. Providing youth with education and empowerment tools can help them become stronger leaders and advocates in the next millennium.

Workshop Descriptions

Participants will have the oppurtunity to take part in three of nine workshops

Advocacy in Action -
L.A. Link 2000
is the "Year 2 Know", and L.A. Link will show you how to identify and respond to tobacco issues in your school, community, and church.

College Bound -
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.
How do I get into college? Learn the strategies and skills necessary to ensure an acceptance letter from the college of your choice. This session will include a panel of current college students.

Communicating the Message -
Chad Berry
Find out how the pros think up the ads and commercials you see - and how to use those skills to promote positive messages. With Chad Berry & Todd Miller of Rubin Postaer & Associates Advertising.

Giving Back - Public Allies How can you make a difference in your community? What are the leadership skills that you need in order to make a change? How can you use your personal experiences to give back to your community? Public Allies can show you the way.

Media Literacy - Roosevelt High School KICK BUTTS Chapter Members The tobacco industry wants you to become new consumers of their tobacco products. Join Roosevelt High School students in discovering tactics used by the tobacco industry to recruit new tobacco users.

BUTT OUT, Billboards! -
Project Impact
Do you ever wonder why there are tons of cigarette advertisements in your community? Learn how to get RID of tobacco billboards and variuos tobacco advertisements in your community.

Tobacco Use in Movies & TV - The STARS Program
When you see your favorite actor lighting up on screen, do you ever wonder who decided to show smoking The STARS program takes you behind-the-screens and gives you a chance to influence your favorite TV shows and movies.

Youth Panel -
Youth Tobacco Control Coalition
Join a group of teens from all over Los Angeles to share personal experiences regarding tobacco use and their struggle to overcome their addiction.

Project YET -
Youth for the Elimination of Tobacco
How do you encourage a friend to stop smoking? How do you reject the pressure from the tobacco industry to start smoking? Learn new techniques that you can share with a friend.
