Honors Health & Business Leaders
with Breath of Life Awards May 6th

(Los Angeles, February 24, 1999) - The American Lung Association of Los Angeles County will honor health and business leaders with the Breath of Life Award at a dinner gala event on May 6, 1999.

The Breath of Life Awards honor "those who touch the lives of many with their commitment and passion to the well being of all." The four honorees this year are: Maria Contreras-Sweet, Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing for the State of California; The Honorable Edward R. Roybal, United States Congressman, emeritus; The Honorable José Angel Pescador Osuna, Consul General of México; and Dionicio Morales, Founder & President, the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation. The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, has been invited to deliver the keynote address for this event, which will take place at the Regal Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Secretary Maria Contreras-Sweet is one of the first Latinas to be appointed to a state cabinet position, and is a Founding Director on the Board of the California Endowment. The Health Plan Enforcement Division, which regulates HMO's in California, falls under her office's responsibility. Congressman Roybal is a former staff member of the American Lung Association of L.A. County, and served in Congress for thirty years, chairing the House Select Committee on Aging. Mr. Morales, a survivor of tuberculosis, focuses his efforts on improving the health and welfare of the Latino community. José Angel Pescador Osuna uses his position as the Consul General of México to encourage public health awareness among the community.

Sponsorship levels are $25,000, $10,000, $5,000, and $3,500, while individual tickets are $250. Interested sponsors or ticket buyers are asked to call Karen Ko at , ext. 225 for details.

"The Breath of Life awards are an opportunity to honor outstanding business, community, and government leaders who have had an impact on health issues," said Enrique Chiock, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County, "We are delighted to be able to recognize their work."

"Each honoree truly embodies the spirit of this event," said Maritza Mendizabal, Banquet Chair for the awards gala, "We are honored to have such outstanding individuals accept this award."

Proceeds from the Breath of Life Awards will support the Association's many programs in pediatric asthma education, lung disease support groups, medical research, and clean air.

The American Lung Association has been fighting lung disease for more than 90 years. With the generous support of the public and the help of volunteers, we have seen many advances against lung disease. However, the work is not finished. As we look forward to our second century, we will continue to strive to make breathing easier for everyone. Along with our medical section, the Trudeau Society of Greater Los Angeles, the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County provides programs of education, community service, advocacy, and research.
